The Shape of Discipline
Polystyrene Foam
60x50x50cm
2026
The Shape of Discipline is a sculpture that uses protective foam(polystyrene) to construct a chair shaped to my body. The work reflects the subtle compromises and bodily adjustments required when inhabiting spaces under the ownership of others. The foam chair mediates between comfort and constraint: while it supports the body, it never fully allows for relaxation or excess, materialising the discipline embedded in rented or regulated domestic spaces.
Drawing on the logic of internalised surveillance and self-regulation, the piece investigates how property structures shape posture, behaviour, and the use of space. Every curve and indentation of the chair responds to the tension between inhabiting and being contained, compressing the act of dwelling into a careful negotiation of personal presence within a framework not entirely your own.
